The constraint is real and it is the first thing to understand: local clubs are blacked out live. If MLB places you inside a club's home television territory, that club's games do not stream live on MLB.TV no matter which team you subscribed for — they appear in the archive roughly 90 minutes after the final out instead. Blackouts follow the location MLB detects from your account and connection, not the team you choose, and territories overlap generously: Iowa sits inside six different clubs' territories, which is the standard cautionary example. mlb.tv/blackouts is the authority, and it is worth checking a ZIP code before buying.

Can I watch my local team with this?

Not live. MLB.TV carries out-of-market games, so any club whose home television territory covers your location is blacked out while the game is on. That game does become available in the archive about 90 minutes after the final out, so you can still watch it the same night — just not in real time. If your reason for subscribing is your hometown club, this is the wrong product.
