An Ulta gift card is tender for salon appointments as readily as for a lipstick, so a $150 card can be a colour appointment rather than a shelf of product. There is no expiration date and no service fee on the balance, several codes can sit on one purchase, and a card larger than the basket keeps its remainder for next time.

Loyalty is not affected by paying this way. Ulta Beauty Rewards — the programme long known as Ultamate Rewards — awards points on the full purchase amount regardless of the tender that settles it, so a gift-card checkout climbs the points ladder exactly as a bank card would. The one thing that earns nothing is buying a gift card, which is Ulta's rule, not ours. Points cannot be used to buy gift cards either.

Do I still earn Ulta Beauty Rewards points if I pay with the gift card?

Yes. Points are awarded on the purchase amount, not on the payment method, so scanning your Ulta Beauty Rewards membership at checkout earns the same points whether a bank card or a gift-card balance settles the bill. Will it work at Ulta Beauty at Target, or on Target.com?

No. The Ulta Beauty shop-in-shops inside Target stores ring through Target's own registers and Target.com is Target's checkout, so an Ulta gift card is not tender at either. Does the balance expire or carry a fee?

No on both counts. Ulta states plainly that its gift cards have no expiration date and no service fees, so the amount you put on the card today is the amount available in several years. Nothing is deducted for dormancy, and there is no activation charge on the code either.

Can I use several codes on one order, or top up the difference?

Both work. Multiple gift-card codes can be applied to a single order in store or on ulta.com, each drawn down in turn, and any shortfall is settled with another payment method at the same checkout. If the basket costs less than the card, the remainder stays on the code for a later visit rather than being lost.

Can I use it to buy another gift card, or to pay an Ulta credit-card bill?

Neither. Ulta's terms bar using a gift card to purchase another gift card, which is a standard anti-laundering rule across US retail. A gift-card balance is also merchandise credit inside Ulta's own tills, not a payment instrument for an Ulta Beauty Rewards credit-card statement, which is billed separately by the issuing bank.

Do I need an Ulta account before I buy this?
