Sheetz has been family-owned since Bob Sheetz bought a single dairy store in Altoona, Pennsylvania in 1952, and it still calls itself a convenience restaurant rather than a gas station. More than 700 stores run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, every one of them with fuel outside and a touchscreen ordering wall inside for the Made-To-Order menu — subs, burgers, burritos, hand-spun shakes — plus Sheetz Bros. Coffeez and the Shweetz bakery case.
The card is called the Z-Card, and the point of it is that one balance covers both halves of the stop. It pays for gasoline and diesel at the pump and for anything sold at the counter: the MTO order, coffee, fountain drinks, snacks, and the car wash at sites that have one. That is unusual — most food cards stop at the door and most fuel cards stop at the forecourt.
Buying it here needs no Sheetz account, no card on file and no identity check. You give us a delivery email, pay in the coin you already hold, and the code arrives in about eleven minutes — which also makes this a workable way to hand fuel money to someone driving through Pennsylvania when you are nowhere near a US bank. The balance never expires and carries no dormancy or service fee, so there is no clock on it.
Two constraints worth naming before you pay. First, the footprint is regional: Sheetz trades in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, North Carolina and now Michigan, and nowhere else — this is not a card that follows someone across the country. Second, a pump pre-authorises a hold before it will dispense, so a card that is nearly empty is quicker to spend by prepaying a set amount at the register than by inserting it outside.
