About this card

RentacarGift is credit for the part of a trip nobody enjoys arranging: the counter. It covers more than 30,000 car rental and ground-transport locations — the airport aisles run by the majors such as Enterprise, Hertz and Avis, the downtown and neighbourhood branches, the regional fleets that only exist in one country, and the airport-transfer operators that meet a late arrival with a name card. One code funds any of them, from a compact for a week in Andalusia to a 4x4 in Iceland or a chauffeured transfer from Narita.

The card is not tied to a supplier, a city or a date at purchase. Redemption happens on the TripGift Travel Value Platform — rentacargift.com is a brand door onto it, and its Book and Redeem link opens the same booking portal and the same free account. The recipient searches the pick-up point and dates, picks the vehicle class, enters the driver's details and applies the code as the payment method at checkout. If the booking costs more than the balance, the difference goes on another payment method in the same step; if it costs less, the remainder stays on the account.

Which rental companies can I actually book with it?

The portal aggregates more than 30,000 car rental and ground-transport locations, so the majors you would expect at an airport aisle — Enterprise, Hertz, Avis and their economy sub-brands — sit alongside regional fleets that only trade in one country, plus airport-transfer operators. You choose the supplier at booking time from live availability, not when you buy the card.

Does the card cover the security deposit at the counter?

No, and this is the single thing worth knowing. The code pays for the rental itself. The desk still places a hold for the security deposit, and every major rental company requires a credit card in the named driver's own name for it, together with their licence. A debit card is refused at many counters. Turning up with only the gift code will not get the keys handed over.

Can I hire a car in a country other than the one I paid in?

Yes — that is the point of the billing-currency model. The currency only fixes how the card was charged, never where it works. A euro card hires a pickup in Arizona, a sterling card hires a compact in Crete, and the portal converts to the local rental rate at booking and draws it from the balance. Only the face value stays in your chosen currency.

What if the rental costs more than the balance on the card?

Nothing breaks. At checkout the portal applies the whole balance first and asks for the remainder on another payment method in the same step, so a $250 card still books a $410 fortnight in a wagon. It works the other way too — book a $90 weekend and the rest stays on the account for the next hire.

Does it expire, and what happens if I lose the code?

The redeemed balance does not expire under the brand's standard terms, so there is no clock once it is on an account. The unredeemed code is the fragile part: it is nonrefundable and not replaceable if lost or stolen, or if a booking made with it is cancelled. Redeem it onto an account soon after delivery rather than leaving it sitting in an inbox.

Can I use the code straight on hertz.com, or hand it over at the desk?

No. It is only spendable inside the TripGift portal that rentacargift.com opens. The booking is made there on your behalf and you arrive at the counter with a normal confirmed reservation in the driver's name. A rental desk has no way to read the code, and neither does the supplier's own website or app.

Do I need an account with anyone before I buy?

Not with us and not with the brand. We take a delivery email and nothing else — no sign-up, no KYC, no identity document at any point. The free portal account is only created at redemption, by whoever is going to drive, and it takes an email address and a password. Put the recipient's address in the delivery field and the code goes straight to them.
