Marshalls sells other retailers' mistakes, and does it across roughly 1,200 US stores. The off-price model means buyers work the market opportunistically — cancelled orders, closeouts, end-of-season packaway, overproduction — so there is no fixed assortment and no reliable restock date, just fresh deliveries several times a week and a floor that is genuinely different from one visit to the next. Two departments give the chain its character: The CUBE, the shoe hall that carries several thousand pairs at a time, and The Runway, the designer rail that appears in selected stores. Online shopping arrived comparatively late, in 2019.

The card is where Marshalls stops being a single store. TJX issues one stored-value instrument for its five American nameplates, which makes the brand printed on the front closer to decoration than to a rule: the same balance is ordinary tender at Marshalls, at T.J.Maxx, at HomeGoods, at HomeSense and at Sierra. In practice that turns a fixed face value into something unusually forgiving — a $250 balance can be a coat here, a duvet set at HomeGoods and a pair of hiking boots at Sierra, drawn down across three separate trips. The one thing to hold in mind is the channel: in store all five accept it, but online it works only where a banner actually sells online, since HomeGoods closed its web shop in 2022 and has stayed a stores-only business.

Can I spend it at T.J.Maxx or HomeGoods instead of Marshalls?

Yes. TJX runs one stored-value programme for all five of its US nameplates, so a card sold as a Marshalls card is equally good at T.J.Maxx, HomeGoods, HomeSense and Sierra. Nothing needs converting and nothing is lost in the move — the register looks up the same balance whichever door you walked through, and you can split it across several banners over several visits.

Does it work online as well as in the stores?

In store, at all five banners. Online, only where a banner actually has a shop: marshalls.com, which launched in 2019, plus tjmaxx.com and sierra.com. HomeGoods closed its website in 2022 and has remained a stores-only business since, so plan on walking in for that one rather than checking out from the sofa.

Will it work at Winners in Canada, or at TK Maxx in Europe?

No. TJX operates those markets as separate businesses on separate systems — Winners, Marshalls and HomeSense in Canada, TK Maxx across Europe and Australia — each with its own gift-card programme and its own currency. A US card is declined at their tills, and there is no mechanism to convert one into the other. Buy this only for a US shopper.

What is actually in a Marshalls, and can the card buy the designer pieces?

The stock is opportunistic: closeouts, cancelled orders and packaway from brands that would rather not discount in their own shops, refreshed several times a week. The CUBE holds the footwear and The Runway carries designer labels in selected stores. Gift-card balance is plain tender, so it buys the Runway handbag as readily as a pack of socks.

Does the balance expire, and can I combine several cards?

No expiry, and no service, dormancy or inactivity fee — comfortably past the five-year federal floor set by the US Credit CARD Act. Several codes can be applied to a single purchase, whatever mix of banners they came through, and anything the balances do not cover is charged to the other payment method you offer at the till.

Can I get cash back, or use it to buy another gift card?

Neither. TJX blocks gift cards from buying further gift cards, and the balance is not redeemable for cash except in the handful of US states whose law requires a small residual to be paid out. What is left after a purchase simply stays on the card for the next visit to any of the five banners.
